Walter Abish is a poet, novelist and critic whose work has been published in literary journals and anthologies in the United States and abroad. His books of poetry include The Black Swan, Seven Views of Hell, The Virgin, and The Birth of the Word (2004). He is the author of eight novels: Light Leaks Out (1991), A Tale Told (1993), Playing with Fire (1997), A Dazzling Darkness (1999), The Secret Life of Walter Abish (2001), Weep Not for Me: The Autobiography of Walter Abish (2004), and The Moon and the Other: Prose Poems (2005). His latest work, Blue Lights: Essays on Poetry, was published in 2006 by Melville House Books
He is also the editor of three volumes of poetry: Five Stories from Contemporary Japanese Poetry (2002), Modern American Poetry: An Anthology (2003), and Selected Poems of Allen Ginsberg (2005). His book-length critical study of Blake's poetry was published in 2003 by McFarland.
